Default Wastrels Worry

OK, I've been using this skill as a spammable chaff skill to cover backfire, but I started wondering...

Wastrels end after 3 seconds, doing 60 points damage, however if the target uses a skill "wastrels worry ends prematurely".

What does that mean? Does it mean that it does 60 points of damage before 3 seconds are up if the target uses a skill, or does it just go away without doing damage?

I've got the impression it just goes away without doing damage?

The way I read it. If they don't use a skill, then they take 60 dmg after 3 seconds. If they do use a skill, they take 60 dmg right then.

No no. The way it reads is: After 3 seconds target takes (x) damage and Wastrels worry ends. If target uses a skill, Wastrels worry ends.

So...if you hit them with this, and they are sitting out backfire, they'll take (x) damage from it after 3 seconds.

However, if you hit them with this to cover backfire, and they use a skill (non-spell) then Wastrels ends. (Using a skill only counts if the skill completes, so long cast time spells will not end Wastrels unless they finish before Wastrels runs it's course.)

And again, if they decide to use a spell to knock of Wastrels, then they'll take damage from Backfire instead (and Wastrels will go away)

Pretty simple skill really. Works great on runners though. Ranged hex that relies on someone not using a skill. If they decide to use a skill, they stop so you can catch (upto) them.

This is the correct interpretation of wastrel's worry.

I'm pretty sure if you use a skill before wastrel's ends you don't take damage.

Wastrels Worry is a terrible skill to cover backfire with if they try to remove hexes themselves ww will end and they will remove backfire

Seems I'm not the only one confused about this skill...
Anyway, my vivisection experiments on charr suggests that Sarus and Photeus is right: the target only takes damage if they DON'T use a skill within 3 seconds. However, it's hard to tell exactly when charr use skill or not, so I'm not 100% sure.

Then Orangearrow brings another good point - does wastrels end BEFORE a remove hex skill is completed, so a remove hex hits the hex it is covering?

Are there any mobs in the game which uses Wastrels?

WW does not protect Hexes from being removed. If you have Backfire and WW on an opponent, both Hexes will be gone after a removal skill is used, and if it were a spell they also take Back Fire damage. Same is true with Diversion as a Hex cover, but the Hex removal skill is "Diverted' (recharges longer) and BF damage is triggered before it's removed.

So then, what's the best way to make use of Diversion/WW/BF?

Wastrel's Worry, like Incendiary Bonds, and Lightning Surge ONLY deal their damage if the enchantment is still on after 3 seconds. If you cast any of those skills on a boss, they'll run out in 1.5 seconds because of the penalty to hexes and conditions on bosses, and they NEVER work because of this.

Wastrel's Worry is a hex, and is automatically removed if the target uses a skill of any kind on his or her skill bar.

You can't. Those 3 skills cannot work together. Diversion+WW or WW+BF, but not all 3 together. Diversion+Shame/Guilt is a nasty combo (and the only thing that comes close to Distracting Shot), but that requires 4 seconds to complete and only works within a 6 second window.

Mindwrack, as a 5 energy quick recharging skill, is a decent cover for hexes. Better than the quicker WW.

The mesmers (storm rider type) in Perdition Rock/Ring of Fire use WW. They combine it with Migrane.

BackFire-->Diversion is really nice. You can punish a spell cast for 147 damage AND add a minute to it's recharge when they try to cast through it. Some bold Monks with great healing skills will sometimes cast once under Back Fire knowing they can recover, but a Diversion on the way in can punish that mistake. Fast Casting both on an Ele is also good fun as they whip out their spells.

WW after Diversion or BF will allow you to get some occassional 67 damage-or-punishment benefits. Don't use it as a primary damage strat, but it's a nice option to have instead of just casting a naked Diversion/BF if the rest of your build has some oomph to it otherwise.
